Roberto Moya

Roberto Saturnino Moya Sandoval (born February 11, 1965 in Havana , † May 21, 2020 in Valencia , Spain ) was a Cuban discus thrower .

He won the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 1987 and 1989. In 1989 he won the bronze medal at the Universiade in Duisburg and won his first of a total of five Cuban championship titles in the discus throw (more followed in 1992–1995). He also won the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico City in 1990 .

On a global level, Moya made his first appearance at the 1991 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo , where he finished eighth. The most important success of his career he achieved with winning the bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . There he placed himself with a width of 64.12 m behind Romas Ubartas (65.12 m) and Jürgen Schult (64.94 m).

Moya's last major international success was winning the title at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata . At the 1996 Olympic Games , however, he was eliminated in the qualifying round.

Roberto Moya was 1.97 m tall and had a competition weight of 135 kg. In 2001 he obtained Spanish citizenship .
