The Gambia Volleyball Association (GVBA) ( German : Gambischer Volleyballverband ) is the umbrella organization of volleyball clubs in the West African state of Gambia .

The Gambia Volleyball Association, founded in 1972, is a member of the Confédération Africaine de Volleyball (CAVB) and the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). She organizes national championships for men and women.

history

The association took part in the FIVB's Africa Dream Project from February 2015 . As part of the project, a center for promoting volleyball was opened in Banjul , Kanifing , Brikama and Farafenni . Courses and tournaments were held there, especially in the youth sector. The project was funded with US $ 30,000 annually and ran for four years.

League games and national cup competitions take place regularly. In 2014, the Interior FC women's team won both the league championship and the cup competitions for the sixth time in a row.

The GVBA also organizes the Gambian beach volleyball teams. There was a first commitment in this area from November 2009, when the association was planning a beach volleyball tournament for the first time. Gambian national teams competed internationally for the first time in 2011. Plans for the permanent establishment of national teams were presented in July 2014. In August of that year, a training course for trainers and referees took place for the first time. In September 2014, a major tournament, the National Beach Volleyball Nawetan , was held for the first time .

In March 2017, an international beach volleyball competition was held for the first time with qualification for the 2019 African Games .

In July 2018, a junior team competed for the first time at the African Youth Games 2018 . Mariama Ginadou (Interior) and Fatoumatta Sillah (Brikama Volleyball Club) started for the female U18 team.In addition, a male U18 team made up of Amadou Jarju and Jahara Koita was used in a competition in September 2018 .

National championships

National championships were held in 2014, 2016/17 and 2018/19.

In the women’s category , Abie Kujabi and Saffie Sawaneh ( Gambia Armed Forces ) won gold twice in a row (2014, 2017). In 2018/19 Kujabi and her team partner Nyima Demba lost to Fatoumatta Ceesay and Mariama Ginadou ( Interior ) in the final in February 2019 .

In the men's category, the Gambia Armed Forces team won in 2017 . In 2018/2019 Amadou Jarju and Malick Jammeh from Gamtel / Gamcel won .

National coaches

National women's team

In January 2011, a Gambian national team in Dakar (Senegal) finished third in the first round of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics and qualified for the second round. Saffie Sawaneh / Abie Kujabi and Sainabou Tambedou / Louis Joof took part in Sierra Leone in July and came in sixth.

In November 2012, Sawaneh and Marie Wadda took part in the Zone 2 Beach Volleyball Championship in Cape Verde and achieved third place.

2015 was a very successful year for the team. In qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics in January 2015, Kujabi, Sawaneh, Tambedou and Fatoumatta Ceesay qualified for the second round in the first round in Dakar . In April 2015, the team took part in the qualification for the 2015 African Games in Dakar for the first time . However, Kujabi and Sawaneh were eliminated with a third place. In November 2015, the 4x4 team from Tambedou, Ceesay, Kujabi and Aminata Gaye won the second round of the CAVB Continental Cup in country group B in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Thus, the players won all twelve games played in 2015.

In the third round (final round) in Abuja (Nigeria) in April 2016, the same team lost four out of five games and was eliminated. This ended the winning streak of 15 games in a row. For their achievements in 2016, the women's national team received the National Sports Awards of the Sports Journalists' Association of The Gambia (SJAG) in April 2017 .

In March 2017, the Sawaneh / Kujabi team won the first qualifying round for the 2019 African Games in Banjul .

In September 2018, Fatoumatta Sillah made her debut at the side of Tambedou at a tournament in Banjul, because Kujabi was injured.

In April 2019, Kujabi and Ceesay competed at the African Nations Cup Beach Volleyball Championship in Abuja (Nigeria) and finished tenth. At the African Beach Games 2019 in June, the two were eliminated in the quarter-finals. They finished tenth at the 2019 African Games in August. At the World Beach Games 2019 in October, the team of Kujabi, Ceesay, Gaye, Tambedou, Anna Marie Bojang and Mariama Ginadou took fifth place in 4x4 beach volleyball.

In January 2020, Ceesay and Kujabi failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Men's national team

In January 2011, a Gambian national team in Dakar (Senegal) finished third in the first round of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics and qualified for the second round. In July in Sierra Leone, Sanu Secka , Ebrima Nyass , Tijan Janko ( Tijan Njanko ) and Ousainou Jatta competed and came through with a third place. In the third round of qualification in Abuja (Nigeria) at the end of October 2011 , Tijan Janko was replaced by Amadou Jarju . The team was eliminated in the semifinals.

In January 2015, the team played in the first round of qualification for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Dakar (Senegal). Malick Jammeh , Babucarr Jarra , Pa Ali Njie and Alieu Barry made it to the next round. In April 2015, the team took part in qualifying for the 2015 African Games for the first time . Jarra and Jammeh qualified with a second place. In November 2015 the team of Secka , Barry , Jarra and Jammeh reached second place in the second round of the CAVB Continental Cup in country group B in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). In the third round in May 2016 in Tunisia, they were eliminated.

In March 2017, Alieu Barry and Ebrima Jatta finished second in the first qualifying round in Banjul for the 2019 African Games .

At the beginning of February 2019, Sainey Jawo and Babucarr Jarra won the bronze medal at the Qatar Senior Beach Volleyball Cup . In April 2019 Jatta and Amadou Jarju took part in the CAVB Beach Volleyball Nations Cup in Abuja (Nigeria). Jarju played together with Jahara Koita at the African Beach Games 2019 in June 2019 . Jawo and Jarra won the gold medal at the 2019 African Games in August.
