Audio file / audio sample Sơn Tây ? / i is a city in northernVietnam. It was the capital of theHà Tâyprovinceuntil it was incorporated into the administrative area ofHanoion August 1, 2008. Until 1965, before it was merged with theHa Dongprovince, Sơn Tây was also the capital of theSơn Tâyprovince of the same name.

Sơn Tây is located 35 km west of the Vietnamese capital Hanoi and is often referred to as the "soldiers city" because of the large number of barracks and other military facilities in the vicinity of the city. The military facilities also include the Infantry School of the Vietnamese People's Army .

In the western media, S wurden Tây was mainly known through Operation Ivory Coast . That was the attempt by the Green Berets , a special task force of the American armed forces, with support from the Air Force and Navy prisoners of war on the morning of November 21, 1970 from the located near the city and as a prisoner of war camp Sơn Tay (Son Tay prison camp) designated Liberate prison camp. The attempt at liberation itself failed because the prisoners of war had previously been transferred to other camps undetected. All of the soldiers of the Green Berets involved in the operation returned to their original locations - with only a small loss of material.
