Thomas David "Tom" Slingsby , AOM (born September 5, 1984 in Sydney ) is an Australian sailor .

successes

Tom Slingsby took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and 2012 in London in the Laser boat class . In 2008 he did not get past 22nd place in his Olympic debut. Four years later he finished four out of ten races in first place and led the field with 25 points before the medal race . Slingsby could only drop back to second place behind Pavlos Kontides and also only finished the medal race in ninth place out of ten, but Kontides himself came last, with Slingsby claiming first place overall. He was Olympic champion ahead of Kontides and Rasmus Myrgren .

At world championships he won his first world championship medal with bronze in the Laser Radial in 2004 , followed by silver in the laser class in 2006 . In 2007 and 2008 and again from 2011 to 2013 he was world champion. He won the America's Cup in 2013 with BMW Oracle Racing . Three years later he also won the Sydney-Hobart Regatta .

In 2010 the World Sailing Association named Slingsby World Sailor of the Year . For his Olympic success, Slingsby received the Australia Order Medal in 2014 .
