Elis Guri (born July 6, 1983 in Shkodra , Albania ) is an Albanian - Bulgarian wrestler . He became world champion light heavyweight free style for Bulgaria in 2011 .

Career

Elis Guri began wrestling in 1997, focusing on the Greco-Roman style . He also became a member of the KS Vllaznia Shkodra sports club . After initial successes in the national field, he moved to the Partizan Tirana sports club . Guri, a strongly built, 1.89 meter tall athlete initially wrestled in the middleweight division , but soon switched to the light heavyweight division , the weight class in which he has been wrestling since 2003.

In the first years of his international career, which began in 2002 with participation in the European Junior Championships in Subotica and in which he finished 21st in the middleweight division, his successes were initially limited. In 2003 he started for the first time at a world championship for seniors. He lost both fights in the light heavyweight division in Créteil and only came in 37th.

He made his first leap forward in 2007. That year he came in 7th place at the World Championships in Baku and defeated u. a. after all, the Russian master Vasili Teplouchow . At the European Championships in Tampere in 2008, he won his first medal in an international championship with 3rd place. He lost there against Mirko Englich from Germany on points. Since he reached the final, Elis Guri was able to wrestle further in the consolation round and secure a bronze medal with a victory over Heiki Nabi from Estonia . This 3rd place also gave him the right to start the Albanian team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . In Beijing he defeated the former Olympic champion Karam Ibrahim from Egypt in his first fight . He then lost his next fights against Mirko Englich and Han Tae-young from South Korea and finally finished 8th.

In 2009 Elis Guri decided to go to Bulgaria for economic reasons and to start for this country in the future. He had to wait for naturalization there for two years and was unable to take part in any international championships during this time. In Bulgaria he became a member of the Litex Lovech sports club . His trainer was Bratan Zenow . At the same time he also wrestled in the German Bundesliga for KSV Köllerbach .

In 2011 he became Bulgarian champion for the first time ahead of Wladyslaw Metodiew and Hussein Husseinow and, starting for Bulgaria, took part in the European Championship in Dortmund . He defeated there in the light heavyweight division Daigoro Timoncini from Italy , Rustam Totrow , Russia and Cenk İldem from Turkey . In the semifinals he lost Artur Aleksanjan from Armenia and in the battle for a bronze medal he defeated Martin Nielsen from Norway . The high point in Elis Guri's career was the world championships this year in Istanbul . There he defeated Sinisa Hogac from Croatia , Robert Awanesjan from Israel , Rustam Totrow, Mohamad Abd El Fatah from Egypt and in the final battle the experienced Swede Jimmy Lidberg and thus became world champion for the first time .

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, however, he was unable to realize his dream of winning a medal. He won in London first over Alin Alexuc-Ciurariu from Romania and Soso Jabidze from Georgia, but lost in his third fight against Timofei Deinichenko from Belarus. Since he did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only finished in 7th place.

In 2013 and 2014, Elis Guri could not take part in any competitions due to injury. But in 2015 he made a comeback. He started in September this year at the World Championships in Las Vegas in the weight class up to 98 kg. He won there over Radoslaw Grzybicki, Poland, Caylor Williams from the United States and Vilius Laurinaitis from Lithuania, but then lost to the 2012 Olympic champion Ghasem Rezaei from Iran. In the fight for one of the bronze medals he finally lost to Islam Magomedow from Russia.

The 5th place at this world championship was enough to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. At the Olympic tournament in Rio he won in the same weight class over Hamza Haloui from Algeria and Revasi Nadareishvili from Georgia, but lost to Fredrik Schön from Sweden. Since Schön did not reach the final, Elis Guri was eliminated and came in 7th place.

Then he ended his wrestling career.

On October 21, 2018, Elis Guri was arrested by the local police in Shkodra / Albania on suspicion of drug trafficking. Two weeks later, he was conditionally released by an appeals court.
