Nikita Wassiljewitsch Melnikow ( Russian: Никита Васильевич Мельников ; born June 27, 1987 in Shakhty , Rostov Oblast ) is a Russian wrestler . He became world champion in the Greco-Roman style light heavyweight in 2013.
Career
Nikolai Melnikov began wrestling as a teenager in 1994. He focuses on the Greco-Roman style. He is a student and trains in a training center in Krasnoyarsk. His coaches were or are Michail Gamsin and Anatoli Strelnikow. With one size he wrestles as an adult in the light heavyweight class, the weight class up to 96 kg body weight.
He made his debut on the international wrestling mat in 2004 when he won the title in the weight class up to 76 kg at the European Junior Championships (Cadets) ahead of Christo Marinow from Bulgaria. His next start at an international championship was in 2007. He won the title in Belgrade at the European Junior Championships in light heavyweight ahead of Mehmet Karim Aras from Germany and Oleg Kryoka from Ukraine. At the Junior World Championships in Beijing in the same year he came in 5th place with three wins and losses against Ahmet Tacyldiz from Turkey and Oleg Kryoko.
In 2008 and 2009 there were no major successes for him. In 2010 he became the first Russian light heavyweight champion. He also won this title in 2011 and 2013, while in 2012 he finished 2nd. Despite these successes at national level, he came to many appearances on the international wrestling mat at major tournaments and at the 2012 World University Championships, where he won ahead of Ahmet Tacyldiz, but never played at the Olympic Games, World or European Championships.
It was not until 2013 that he was used at the European Championships in Tbilisi. He won there in the light heavyweight division, initially over the ex-world champion Balasz Kiss from Hungary, but was already defeated in his next fight against Cenk İldem from Turkey by just a few points (1: 2 rounds, 2: 3 points). Since this did not reach the finals, he was eliminated and only came in 8th place. In July 2013 he was used by the Russian Wrestling Federation, as it were for the dress rehearsal for the World Championships, at the Universiade in Kazan. There he was in excellent shape and defeated the silver medalist from the 2012 Olympic Games Artur Aleksanjan from Armenia in the final battle . Nikita Melnikow also had this good form at the World Championships in Budapest. There he defeated Daigoro Timoncini, Italy, Melonin Noumonvi , France, Timo Antero Kallio , Finland, Norikatsu Saikawa , Japan, Schalwa Gadabadse , Georgia and again Artur Aleksanjan and thus became the new world champion in a superior style.
In January 2014, Nikita Melnikow lost in the final of the important "Iwan-Poddubny" Grand Prix in Tyumen in the new weight class up to 98 kg against Musa Jewlojew , Russia, who was then used at the European Championships in Vantaa / Finland. In May 2014, however, Nikita Melnikow was part of the Russian team at the World Cup in Tehran, a team competition that was won by Iran. He was used three times and won over Suleyman Demirci, Turkey, but lost against Balasz Kiss from Hungary and against Mehdi Aliyari from Iran.
