Dawit Safarjan ( Armenian Դավիթ Սաֆարյան ; Russian Давид Сафарян Dawid Safarjan ; English David Safaryan ; born August 1, 1989 in Cherkessk , Autonomous Oblast Karachay-Cherkessia , Russian SFSR , USSR ) is an originally Russian , then Armenian wrestler . Career

Dawit Safarjan began freestyle wrestling in early childhood on the initiative of his father, who was a master of sport in this discipline. Since 2003 Safarjan trained with the trainer Abdullah Magomedow in Krasnodar . From 2006 to 2009 he was part of the junior team of Russia. Right at his first start in an international championship, the Junior European Championship (Cadets) in 2006 in Istanbul, he won the European title in the weight class up to 58 kg. In 2007 he was also the European Junior Champion in Belgrade. In the final he defeated Ismail Emin Redschep from Bulgaria in the featherweight division . In 2008 he came at the Junior European Championships in Kosice in the lightweight behind Ender Coşkun, Turkey, but before Jabrail Hasanow from Azerbaijan on the 2nd place. Behind this Jabrail Hasanow he was vice world champion of the junior lightweight in Ankara in 2009.

He then decided to start for Armenia in the future, where he began to work with the coach Juri Babajan, who had trained with his father at the time, and the Armenian head coach Arajik Baghdadjan. He trains in the training center of the Armenian national wrestling team in Yerevan , but also often in Vladikavkaz in North Ossetia. He focuses on the free style, is a student, but lives from wrestling. At a height of 1.74 meters, it starts in the lightweight, the weight class up to 66 kg body weight.

Dawit Safarjan made his first start at an international senior championship at the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul. He lost it in the lightweight against Olympic champion Mawlet Batirow from Russia just on points (1: 2 rounds, 2: 3 points). But since Batirow did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 25th place. In 2012 he won the first senior medal at the European Championships in Belgrade with a 3rd place. On the way to this success he defeated Georg Marchl, Austria, Emin Asisow , Azerbaijan, lost to Alan Gogajew , Russia and won the decisive battle for this bronze medal Yakup Gör from Turkey. In April 2012, he won a tournament in Sofia to qualify for the Olympic Games in London. He took second place in the lightweight behind Ali Schabanau from Belarus and in front of Jan Ceaban, Romania and Dejan Mitrow, Macedonia.

At the Olympic wrestling tournament in London he won his first fight over Omar Abdou Abdou from Egypt, but then lost to Aqschürek Tanatarow from Kazakhstan, which he eliminated and finished in 8th place.

In March 2013 Dawit Safarjan won the European lightweight title in Tbilisi with victories over Maxime Eric Fiquet, France, Aljaksandr Kantojeu , Belarus, Mihail Sawa , Moldova and Yakup Gör. At the Universiade in Kazan, he was defeated in the final by the Russian Magomed Kurbanalijew and therefore took 2nd place. At the World Cup this year in Budapest he was in excellent shape again and was able to take revenge against Magomed Kurbanalijew. In Budapest he defeated George Bucur , Romania, Rafael Statkiewicz , Poland, Magomed Kurbanalijew, Lewan Kelekschaschwili , Georgia and Liván López Azcuy , Cuba and became world champion for the first time.
