Career

Ilyas Bekbulatow started wrestling as a teenager in 2002. He is a member of a wrestling club in Kaikent and is trained by Magomed Magomedow.

In 2007 Ilyas Bekbulatow started at the European Junior Championships (age group Cadets) in Warsaw and won there in the weight class up to 46 kg. A year later, in 2008, he came in the junior European championship in Kosice in the weight class up to 50 kg behind Vladimer Khinchegashvili from Georgia on the 2nd place. He did not make any further starts at international junior championships.

As a senior Ilyas Bekbulatow needed a few years to fight his way into the top class in Russia because of the great competition. His next start at important international tournaments was therefore not completed until 2012. He also won medals at several tournaments. In January 2013 he won the most important Russian tournament, the "Iwan Yarigin" Golden Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in the lightweight ahead of Brent Metcalf , United States, Soslan Ramonow and Rasul Murtasalijew , both from Russia. He was then used by the Russian Wrestling Federation at the 2013 European Championships in Tbilisi. There he won over Andrei Kwiatkowski, Ukraine, Konstantin Chabalaschwili , Georgia and Magomed Muslimow, Azerbaijan, lost to Yakup Gör , Turkey and finally secured a bronze medal with a victory over Adrian Ionut Moise from Romania. At the 2013 World Cup and the 2014 World and European Championships, Ilyas Bekbulatov was not used.

In January 2015 he won the prestigious "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in the weight class up to 65 kg, ahead of Brent Metcalf from the United States, Saurbek Sidakow and Yevgeny Erbayev, both from Russia. In June 2015, he then represented the Russian colors at the European Games in Baku in the same weight class. In Baku he lost his first fight against Olympic champion Toğrul Əsgərov from Azerbaijan, who was exposed as a doping offender in 2017, and then secured a bronze medal with victories over Mihail Sava, Moldova, Maxime Eric Fiquet, France and Asamat Nurikau, Belarus.

In 2016, Ilyas Bekbulatow took 5th place at the "Iwan-Yarigin" Grand Prix and was unable to qualify for the international championships (Olympic Games and European Championships) this year. In 2017 he won again at the "Iwan-Yarigin" Grand Prix in the weight class up to 65 kg, ahead of Cherman Waliev and Alan Gogajew , both from Russia and Mohammed Mehdi Yeganehjafari, Iran. In May 2017, he started at the European Championships in Novi Sad and won the European Championship in the same weight class with victories over Elbrus Cherkoyev, Slovakia, Gitinomagomed Gadschiew, Azerbaijan, Surabi Iakobishvili , Georgia and Borislaw Novachkov , Bulgaria.

After his renewed victory at the "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in January 2018 ahead of Ahmed Tschakajew and Nachiin Kuular, both from Russia, he was used again in May 2018 at the European Championships in Kaspiisk. There he won over Andrei Perpelita, Moldova, the Olympic champion Wladimer Chintschegaschwili , Georgia and Krzysztof Bienkowski, Poland, but was defeated in the final against Hajji Aliyev from Azerbaijan, whereupon he became vice-European champion. He was not used at the 2017 and 2018 World Cups.

He has started for Uzbekistan since 2020.
