Kyle Douglas Dake (born February 25, 1991 in Ithaca , New York ) is an American wrestler . In 2018 and 2019 he became world champion in free style in the weight class up to 79 kg body weight.
Career
Kyle Douglas Dake started wrestling at a Lansing High School. He began as a so-called folk style wrestler, i. H. he wrestled in the free as well as in the Greco-Roman style. He was trained by his father Doug Dake and John Kotmel. He then attended Cornell University and wrestled for the local wrestling club. He starts for the New York RTC and the Titan Mercury WC and lives in Ithaca.
As a junior he was already one of the best young American wrestlers and qualified for a start at the Junior World Championships in Istanbul in 2009, where he competed in the Greco-Roman style. He finished there in featherweight (up to 60 kg body weight) after a won and a lost fight in 14th place.
He was very successful as a student wrestler. Between 2010 and 2013 he was NCAA champion (= US student champion) four times in a row, each in a different weight class (up to 141 lbs., 149 lbs., 157 lbs. And 165 lbs.). During his time as a student champion, he played 141 fights, of which 137 won.
In 2012 he failed in the attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games this year (US trials) in welterweight (up to 74 kg body weight) with a 3rd place behind Jordan Burroughs and Andrew Howe. He also failed in the US trials for the 2013 and 2015 World Championships to Jordan Burroughs . In 2016 he failed in the middleweight Olympic trials (up to 86 kg body weight) against J'den Michael Cox . In 2017 he did not succeed in qualifying for the US American World Championship team, because he only came second in the welterweight division behind Jordan Burroughs. In 2018 he finally managed to qualify for the World Championship in Budapest at the World Championship trials. He won in the weight class up to 86 kg before Zahid Valencia.
In 2016 and 2018, Kyle Dake was also US champion and in 2017 US runner-up in the weight classes up to 74 kg and 79 kg body weight, respectively.
In his international career, he achieved a few good placements between 2013 and 2017. But he did not make his big breakthrough until 2018. In January of this year, he took second place at the "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in the weight class up to 79 kg, behind Akhmed Gadschimagomedov and ahead of Alan Saseev and Radek Waliev, all of them Russia. In July 2018 he won the "Yasar Dogu Memorial" in Istanbul in the same weight class ahead of Ibrahim Jusubow, Azerbaijan, Rustam Dudajew, Uzbekistan and Jabrail Hasanow, Azerbaijan. He achieved great success at the World Championships that year in Budapest, because he was there in free style in the weight class up to 79 kg with victories over Martin Obst , Germany, Dawit Chuzishvili , Georgia, Achmed Gadschimagomedow , whom he won 13-0 techn. Points downright outclassed and Jabrail Hasanow , against whom his win with 2-0 points was just but deserved, new world champion.
In 2019 Kyle Dake successfully defended his world title in Nur-Sultan. He won in the same weight class against Oibek Nasirow, Kyrgyzstan, Gadschi Nabijew , Russia, Raschid Kurbanow, Uzbekistan and in the final as in the previous year Jabrail Hasanow, whom he 10: 4 techn. Points clearly mastered.
