List of grape varieties
Justinus Kerner

Kerner is a white wine variety. The variety is a Riesling-like new breed from the LVWO Weinsberg and is of greatest importance in Germany. The area under cultivation has declined sharply in Germany.

Descent, origin

In their breeding at the remote location Lauffen the National Training and Research Institute for vineyards and orchards , which is based in the vineyard has 1,929 red were Trollinger and white Riesling by the Rebzüchter August Herold crossed . The new breed received plant variety protection in 1969 and was entered in the list of varieties in the same year . At the beginning people spoke of the white herald, later the grape variety was renamed Kerner with reference to the Swabian poet Justinus Kerner , who had lived in Weinsberg.

In 1974 a mutation of Kerner was found, the new grape variety Kernling .

Ampelographic variety characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open and moderately hairy whitish, bronzed.
  • The shoots are strong and the shoots show strong stinginess .
  • The medium-sized circular leaves are five-lobed and strongly indented. The stem bay is V-shaped and overlaps. The leaf surface is slightly blistered.
  • The shouldered grape is small to medium in size and cone-shaped. The round berries are medium to large and green-yellow in color. The taste of the pulp is neutral.

Maturity: medium late

properties

The good winter frost resistance, the strong vigor and the later budding are advantageous. This avoids possible late spring frosts. The disadvantage is the susceptibility to oidium and the strong formation of stinginess, which requires increased leaf work. There is also a hypersensitivity to the Arabism Mosaic Virus (core disease).

Expectations

The relatively robust variety only makes medium-high demands on the location. Extremely dry locations are unsuitable.

Yield

Is a very high yielding variety.

distribution

The variety has the greatest importance in Germany.

Cultivation has declined sharply in recent years and is suffering from the negative image as a new breed . The "Justinus K." Special line launched by the Weinsberg Research Institute is intended to emphasize the value of this variety. The label is linked to special requirements in the vineyard and cellar and can be used nationwide.
