List of grape varieties |
Kernling is a white wine that was mutated from the Kerner grape variety . In 1974, Ludwig Hochdörffer found this mutation in a Kerner vineyard in the municipality of Nussdorf near Landau in the Palatinate . The variety received plant variety protection in 1991 and was entered in the list of varieties of the Federal Plant Variety Office in 1995 .
The name is made up of the syllable Kern (reference to the mother plant Kerner) and ling (as reference to Riesling , as the type of wine is similar). Kernling has a similar wine quality as Kerner, but is significantly less susceptible to disease and has a lower tendency to develop stingy instincts . In 2007, the vine statistics showed a planted area of 18 hectares in Germany, after 19 hectares in 2001.

Ampelographic variety characteristics
- The shoot tip is open and very hairy whitish.
- The medium-sized leaves are three-lobed and strongly indented. The stem bay is V-shaped or even overlapped. The blade is serrated or serrated. The leaf surface (also called blade) is slightly blistered.
- The shouldered grape is medium to large. The round berries are medium to large and pink in color. The skin of the berry is thick. The aroma of the berry is fine and has a weak bouquet of varieties.
The Kernling sprouts relatively late (shortly after the Müller-Thurgau ). This avoids possible late spring frosts. The flowering time is one to two days after the Müller-Thurgau. The Kernling is characterized by a good winter frost hardiness. A disadvantage of the kernel is its susceptibility to disease, especially against oidium but also against downy mildew . Genetically, the grape variety tends to be more stingy, although less pronounced than with Kerner. For this reason, the seedling requires particularly careful care in the vineyards .
Wine
The wines are similar to Riesling , have a high sugar content and good acidity .
