geography

Kottenborn is located in the Hocheifel , four kilometers southwest of the city of Adenau on an area sloping from south to north into the valley of the Goldbach . The residential development of the village covers altitudes of 470  m above sea level. NHN to 515  u m. NHN . The boundaries of the municipality are formed over large parts of the Goldbach in the north and the Wirftbach in the west, at the confluence of which it is about 395  m above sea level. NHN reaches its lowest point of the ground . The residential area Unter dem Acker , which lies north and slightly below the main town, belongs to Kottenborn .

Neighboring communities are Wimbach and Quiddelbach .

history

The name "Kottenborn" indicates "Kottenbauer" ("Hüttenbauer") and was used as a name for the first inhabitants of the place. The name was later probably transferred from the farm "Cottenborn" to the place it is today. The name "Cottenbuyr" was first mentioned in a chapel building document from July 20, 1403.

The date of origin of the first settlement yard in Kottenborn, from which the place developed, is unknown. Kottenborn belonged to 1794 to the office of mayor Adenau in the Electoral Cologne office Nürburg . When the French administration began to break up all rulers on the left bank of the Rhine from 1794 , the place went to the newly formed canton Adenau . After the French Empire had been pushed back again, Kottenborn belonged to the Prussian mayor's office and to the Adenau district. From 1813 arose border disputes with Wimbach , Wimbach emerged as the winner, which received the districts "Hatzerder Busch" and "Selbach". The Goldbach formed the border between the two places. Renewed disputes between the two villages from 1817 onwards Kottenborn was not able to end as a victor until 1847.

In 1916, Kottenborn's water supply was greatly expanded. The place was electrified in 1923.

From 1932 Kottenborn was in the area of ​​the Ahrweiler district. Bombings in World War II caused some aircraft to crash in the Kottenborn district . During the land consolidation in 1960/61, the place was canalized and an asphalt road was laid.

Reasons for the coat of arms: The coat of arms shows the sign of the local patron St. Antonius, the T-shaped Antonius cross with a bell on each of the transverse arms. The chapel, which the Johanniterkommende Adenau allowed to be built, has the year 1525 in the late Gothic choir in the keystone. The two-axle nave was built in the 17th century. In the past it was often visited by pilgrims on St. Anthony's Day (January 17th). The special connection between Kottenborn and the Order of St. John is documented by the inclusion of the St. John cross in the coat of arms.

Culture and sights

  • The branch church St. Antonius in Kottenborn was built around 1403. With over 600 years of age, it is the oldest church in the Trier diocese. The late Gothic choir was built in 1525, the two-axle nave was added in the 17th century. An exchange and renovation of the roof took place in 1826. During the extensive restoration financed by the state, district, diocese and community, late Gothic frescoes that were valuable from a cultural point of view were exposed. A second bell was installed in 1984. Another renovation was carried out from 1999 to 2000, whereby u. a. the exterior plaster was renewed and the top of the bell tower was rebuilt.
