The Catholic parish church of St. Gertrud in Barweiler , a local parish in the Ahrweiler district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), was built in the 17th century.

history

Barweiler already had a chapel before 940, which together with the mother church in "Okyshem" ( Üxheim ) belonged to the Trier Abbey of St. Maximin . On May 6, 1140, Pope Innocent II took Barwilre and its church under his protection, along with other possessions of the abbey . In the Liber valoris of the Archdiocese of Cologne from the 14th century, Barweiler is listed as belonging to the Eifeldekanat, but does not designate the place as a parish. In a list from 1668, the patron saint of the parish church in Barweiler is St. Gertrud and St. Nicholas ; Kollator was the abbot of St. Maximin . Barweiler became a parish church during the Reformation , because the mother church in Üxheim went over to Lutheran teachings at the time and Barweiler separated from Üxheim.

Today's church, consecrated to St. Gertrude von Nivelles , was built on the site of a previous building in the 18th century. Due to the influx of pilgrims, the church was rebuilt in 1826/27 and the last extension was made in the 1960s when a north wing was added, which is the same size as the previous nave .

architecture

The single-aisle west-facing old quarry stone building is 23.95 meters long and 10.25 meters wide. The arched windows are framed with basalt lava . On the east side of the slate-covered roof is a square roof turret with a Welscher hood . Inside the flat ceiling is provided with slight arches and the wall painting is kept discreet. The left side altar is dedicated to Our Lady with the lily , her statue is behind glass for protection.

Marian pilgrimage in Barweiler

It is said that the pilgrimage to the Mother of God with the lily in Barweiler originated during the Reformation . It is said that in the summer of 1726 the statue of Our Lady in the church was decorated with flowers and a lily was placed in the right hand of the statue. After the lily had already withered, it began to bud again in September to mark the feast of the birth of the Virgin Mary . This miracle , examined and recognized by the church authorities, led to the fact that the church in Barweiler was viewed by the Eifel population as a special place of grace. In the following years a brisk stream of pilgrims began and many miraculous healings and answers to prayer took place.

Since then, numerous processions from all over the Eifel have come to Barweiler from September to mid-October . The pilgrimage season ends on October 13th.
