Old school

The first elementary school for the children of Kirmutscheid, Hoffeld and Werft was built here in 1829. Even from the more distant mill throw, where there used to be a large courtyard and a mill in addition to the pilgrimage church, children sometimes attended this school. The way to school from the villages of Hoffeld and Werft to the east and west took about 15 to 20 minutes. Hoffeld's children previously went to school in Barweiler . After Kirmutscheid, however, the way to school was half the time.

Meaning of the place name

There are different versions of the origin and meaning of the place name Kirmutscheid. The teachers at the elementary school in Kirmutscheid explained the name in the following way. "Kir" means the curve (turn) in dialect, which should mean the curve or the "curve" that the Trierbach makes around the church. The word “courage” describes the right to dig for treasure. But it can also be called a mountain.

After all, “scheid” probably refers to the border between Kurköln and Kurtrier , which the Trierbach partially formed here.
