Alois Johannes Plum (born March 2, 1935 in Mainz ) is an artist living in Mainz-Weisenau . He created numerous concrete and leaded glass windows for churches all over Germany. His work also includes wall paintings , mosaics , the design of tabernacles , ambo and color concepts in church rooms. Since 1957 he has designed over 200 churches, some of them new buildings, some renovations in the course of the destruction caused by the Second World War , as well as public buildings and private rooms. Characteristic is on the one hand its architecture-related interpretation, the harmony of historical sacred building and modern glass art, on the other hand its careful alignment with the liturgical function of its art.

Life

Alois Plum was born in 1935 as the son of Josef Plum († 1988), a painter and graphic artist of church textile art in the Mainz area. From 1951 to 1955 he attended the Mainz State Art School, where he studied with Peter Paul Etz , he took part in the International Summer Academy in Salzburg with Oskar Kokoschka . From 1955 to 1957 he studied with Georg Meistermann at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , and since 1957 he has worked as a freelance artist in Mainz. Plum is particularly known for his exploration and reinterpretation of historical church rooms and his careful integration of glass into the church architecture, with reference to the liturgical functions of the environment.
