history

Memorial on the church forecourt

The Diakoniekirche was built together with the motherhouse of the former Diakonieanstalten according to plans by the architect Friedrich Langenbach . Construction began in 1897 and the shell was finished in 1898. The church was consecrated on May 27, 1903. The church was badly damaged during World War II . The restoration of the church took place, among other things, because of the serious post-war shortage of craftsmen by the deaconesses and residents of the institution.

“The roof of our destroyed church is currently being covered. The building is no longer as high as it used to be. The self-made roof tiles were dragged in by sisters and children, one sister even sat on the rafters. "

- Notes from Sister Auguste Neussel, quoted from: Ulrike Winkler: 125 years of the kreuznacher diakonie foundation p. 292

After its restoration, the church was consecrated again on November 6, 1949. During the restoration, the pulpit and organ were placed over the altar . From 1979 to 1980 the room was completely redesigned by the architect Heinrich Otto Vogel from Trier . A semicircular apse was added and new church windows were built according to designs by the glass painter Alois Plum . The furnishings were supplemented by a large bronze cross based on a design by Ulrich Henn and another organ from the Rudolf von Beckerath workshop . In 1981 the tower was given a new spire.

Steeple

Jackdaws , barn owls , kestrels and bats have lived in the church tower for over 50 years . When the church tower was renovated after World War II, the deaconesses left openings for the animals. Nest boxes were also installed in the 1980s . The nest boxes are now being looked after by the nature conservation association NABU Bad Kreuznach. In 2007 the church tower was awarded the " Lebensraum Kirchturm " plaque .
