In 2007 the kestrel was selected as bird of the year . This bird uses niches and entry holes in church towers to set up its nest inside. In the past, however, many of these niches on the church towers were lost in the course of renovation work. In cooperation with the Advisory Committee for the German Bell System , NABU launched the Church Tower Living Space project . This should help those responsible, but also visitors to churches, for this shrinking habitat for bats , barn owls and jackdawsand other species: the aim is to keep openings in buildings open to these species. In addition, a breeding opportunity should be created by attaching additional nest boxes. It has proven to be positive that the settlement of kestrels has pushed back feral city pigeons . As a rule, the installed incubators are checked regularly, often by volunteers from the local NABU groups.

In 2018, more than 1,000 churches in Germany are involved in the project. Most of them are in Baden-Württemberg (223 churches), Thuringia (163) and Lower Saxony (161). The participation of the churches depends heavily on local mobilization. In Thuringia, for example, there was a call in the press to take part in the campaign beyond the 32 participating churches in the Nordhausen district . There, for example, St. Martin's Church in the Heilbad Heiligenstadt is equipped with a nest box.
