Jacques-Julien Dubochet (born May 10, 1798 in Vevey , † September 4, 1868 in Munich ) was a Swiss lawyer and editor of the newspaper L'Illustration .

Life

Jacques Dubochet was the son of the court clerk and diplomat Jean-François-David Dubochet and Suzanne-Marguerite Blanc. He studied at the University of Lausanne in 1814 before studying law from 1817 and being sworn in as a lawyer in Paris . Together with Adophe Thiers , he founded the government-critical newspaper Le National . From 1830 he worked as a publisher himself and made friends with the bookseller Jean-Baptiste-Alexandre Paulin . They published, among other things, The Human Comedy by Honoré de Balzac . Dubochet also published the works of his cousin Rodolphe Töpffer in Paris .

In 1843 Dubochet joined forces with Alexandre Paulin with Adolphe Joanne and Édouard Charton . Together they launched the newspaper L'Illustration , for which they were inspired by the Illustrated London News . In 1845 the newspaper Histoire de monsieur Cryptogam was published as a comic by Rodolphe Töpffer, painted by Cham .

In 1849 he became general secretary of the Paris gas company, under the direction of his uncle Emmanuel-Vincent Dubochet , owner of the Château des Crêtes in Clarens (municipality of Montreux ) and the famous "Dubochet villas".

In 1860 he became a member of the Société de Géographie . He is the author of the book History of the Swiss , published in 1825 by Raymond Verlag in Paris.
