Jacques Dubochet
Jacques Dubochet (born June 8, 1942 in Aigle , VD ) is a Swiss biophysicist . In 2017 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry alongside Richard Henderson and Joachim Frank for the cryo-electron microscopy method he developed . Today he teaches at the University of Lausanne .
Life
After two years at the Cantonal School Trogen Dubochet put her in 1962 Baccalaureate in the canton of Vaud from. In 1967 he graduated from the École polytechnique de l'Université de Lausanne (EPUL) as a physics engineer , and in 1969 he graduated from the University of Geneva with a degree in molecular biology . Even then he was researching DNA and other cell components using electron microscopy , which became his main research topic. In 1973 he received his doctorate in biophysics in Geneva and under Eduard Kellenberger at the University of Basel . Between 1974 and 1978 he also worked at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. From 1978 to 1987 he headed a research group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg , where he developed cryo-electron microscopy and published it with Alasdair W. McDowall in 1981. In 1987 he became a university professor at the University of Lausanne in the department of ultrastructural analysis. From 1998 to 2002 he headed the biology faculty. In 2007 he retired.
With normal electron microscopy, the sample is placed in a vacuum, which distorts the observation in the case of biological substances that always contain water. Dubochet and others found a way to examine the samples closer to their original state by cooling them so quickly that no large ice crystals formed.
In 2015 he received the first Lennart Philipson Award from EMBL.
In 2017 Dubochet received - together with Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson - the Nobel Prize in Chemistry . He would like to donate part of the prize money of 360,000 Swiss francs , which is in an account with the Alternative Bank Switzerland (ABS): On the one hand, he wants to support aid projects for migrants and, on the other hand, the "Biology and Society" program of the University of Lausanne.
Political commitment
Dubochet sits for the SP in the city parliament of Morges . He is a staunch conservationist and has always been interested in environmental protection and sustainability. So he went to demonstrate against the planned Kaiseraugst nuclear power plant on his second date with his future wife .
Fighting climate change is currently one of his main political concerns. He is a member of the initiative committee of the Glacier Initiative and of the Organization Climate Grandparents Switzerland. In the Credit Suisse trial against climate activists, he was one of the key witnesses alongside Sonia Seneviratne , Professor of Land and Climate Dynamics at ETH Zurich .
Private
Jacques Dubochet is married to an artist and art therapist; the couple has two children. His great-grandfather Jacques-Julien Dubochet was the editor of the newspaper L'Illustration . He is also dyslexic and, according to his own statements, was not a good student during his school days. Dubochet was a first lieutenant in the Swiss Army .
