Michael Smith (chemist)

Michael Smith , CC , OBC (born April 26, 1932 in Blackpool , England , † October 4, 2000 in Vancouver , Canada ) was a Canadian chemist. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993 together with Kary B. Mullis .

Life

Michael Smith studied chemistry and received his PhD from Manchester University in 1956 . This was followed by a research stay in Vancouver with Har Gobind Khorana , 1968 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Smith went to Wisconsin with Khorana's research group in 1960 , but returned to Vancouver in 1961, where he became professor of biochemistry at the University of British Columbia in 1966 .

He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993 for his fundamental contributions to the establishment of oligonucleotide-based , site-specific mutagenesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and its development for protein studies . In 1986 he received a Gairdner Foundation International Award . He was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada in 1981, the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 1995, and the United States' National Academy of Sciences in 1996 .
