Sophie von Adelung: Self-Portrait (1893)

Sophie von Adelung (born March 11, 1850 in Stuttgart ; † June 15, 1927 there ) was a German writer and painter of Russian origin. She also published under the pseudonym S. Aden .

Life

Sophie Nikolaus belonged to the third generation of the Russian noble family Adelung , founded by her grandfather Friedrich von Adelung (1768–1843) . Her parents were the Württemberg privy councilor and secretary of Olga von Württemberg Nikolaus von Adelung (1809–1878) and Alexandrine von Schubert (1824–1901). She was the sister of the writer Olga von Adelung (1864–1952), the entomologist Nikolaus von Adelung and the builder of Elisenhofs in Backnang Alexander von Adelung (1860–1915), as well as the cousin of the meteorologist Wladimir Köppen and the writer and mathematician Sofja Kowalewskaja , for which she published her youth memories of Sophie Kowalewsky in the bi-monthly issues of the Deutsche Rundschau in 1896 . In August 1914 she wrote a telegram to King Wilhelm II regarding the "exemption from daily reporting due to Russian citizenship", so that it can be assumed that she had both German and Russian citizenship.

Sophie von Adelung mainly wrote writings for young people, some of which she illustrated herself. In it she partly dealt with Russia; she also published stories that she had translated from Russian. Sophie von Adelung also wrote regularly for magazines such as Die Frau , Fürs Haus or Die Truth and also published in Thekla von Gumpert's Töchter album .
