Life

Origin and family

Alexander was a member of the Russian noble family Adelung founded by his grandfather Friedrich von Adelung (1768–1843) . His parents were the Württemberg privy councilor and secretary of Olga von Württemberg Nikolaus von Adelung (1809–1878) and Alexandrine von Schubert (1824–1901). He was a brother of the writer Olga von Adelung (1864–1952), the Russian entomologist Nikolaus von Adelung (1857–1917) and the painter Sophie von Adelung (1850–1927) and a cousin of the meteorologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) and the mathematician Sofja Kowalewskaja (1850-1891).

He married Elise Hess (1878-1959) on July 30, 1896 in Backnang. The daughter Elisabeth (* 1897) emerged from the marriage.

Career

After finishing school, Adelung attended the Polytechnic in Stuttgart from autumn 1876 to May 1879 . Studies in Munich and St. Petersburg followed, before enrolling on April 1, 1882 for a degree in agriculture at the University of Hohenheim . In the autumn of 1882 he moved again, this time to Heidelberg where he stayed until August 1887 and became a Dr. phil. received his doctorate .

With the firm intention of building an agricultural estate, he acquired land in Backnang on June 28, 1895 . By 1896 a residential and economic building and a coach house were built according to plans by the architect Karl Maisenbacher. He enlarged his property, which he named "Elisenhof" after his wife, by buying it again on August 18, 1896 and, in addition to the management, began building a park . The thematic focus of the economy was on fruit growing . Adelung was one of the initiators of the Backnang District Fruit Growing Association, which he also chaired from February to November 1901.

Presumably in connection with a Russian employment relationship, which has probably already existed since his student days. The Adelung family moved to Innsbruck in 1901. The Elisenhof has since been leased and has housed a preparatory institute since 1908 . In 1905 the family moved again to Berlin, where Adelung died but was buried in Stuttgart. He was a Russian citizen all his life, his wife and daughter until 1926.

The short time (1895–1901) Adelungs worked in Backnang is described as an example. Numerous exhibitions, lectures and presentations took place on the estate. Adelung has won awards several times with its products.

The Backnang fruit farm is now structurally enclosed by its original peripheral location and is today a local gem with its manor house, which is described as "an ornament and revitalization of the Backnang landscape", and the surrounding park with its trees from the establishment.
