- March 20 : The novel Uncle Tom's Cabin ( Onkel Toms Hütte ) by Harriet Beecher Stowe is published for the first time in book form with a circulation of 5,000 copies. The work is out of stock within 48 hours. In the same year, numerous works by other authors that can be assigned to anti-Tom literature are published .
- March: The first part of the serial Bleak House by Charles Dickens is published.
- August: Jules Verne publishes the short story L'Amérique du Sud. Moeurs péruviennes. Martin Paz, nouvelle historique ( Martin Paz ). In the same year he also published Les Châteaux en Californie ou Pierre qui roule n'amasse pas mousse .
- Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy publishes his first work, the short story Childhood , in which he fuses fictional and autobiographical elements.
- Jeremias Gotthelf writes the story Barthli der Korber .

- Friedrich Hebbel's tragedy Agnes Bernauer has its world premiere in Munich. It has been controversial from the start but becomes a hit with the public.
- The comedy The Poor Bride by Alexander Ostrowski appears (premiered in 1853).
- Lermontov's verse drama Masquerade is premiered.

- April 29th : In Great Britain, the 15,000-word thesaurus by Peter Mark Roget is published , which quickly triggers new editions due to high demand.
- May 18 : In the American magazine Die Revolution , Karl Marx publishes the book The Eighteenth Brumaire by Louis Bonaparte , which he completed on March 25 , in which he analyzes the coup d'état of Louis Napoleon in 1851 . In the same year Marx became the London correspondent for the New York Tribune .
