Karl Baldamus

Karl Baldamus (born October 14, 1784 in Roßla ; † December 13, 1852 in Vienna ) was a German lawyer , publicist , poet , storyteller and poet .

Life

The son of a tax collector, he attended from 1798 to 1803 the country Pforta and received his doctorate in 1806 at the University of Wittenberg to Dr. iur. He became mayor in Bleckede an der Elbe , then French procurator in Harburg ad Elbe , lawyer in Uelzen and domain administrator in Bleckede. Suspected of membership in the French secret police, he was arrested in 1813, but was soon acquitted.

From 1815 to 1825 he worked as a lawyer in Lüneburg and Hamburg before going to Gentz ​​in Vienna as a secretary. In 1825 Baldamus converted to Catholicism and took the middle name Max, but became Protestant again in 1834. In 1834 he applied in vain for a professorship at the newly founded University of Bern , where he stayed for a while after a short stay in Stuttgart .

In revenge for his non-acceptance, he wrote a diatribe under the pseudonym Eugen von St. Alban in 1835 and in 1836 he went back to Vienna. On personal intervention by Metternich, he received permission to settle here. He was hardly ever active as a writer and stayed there until his death.

Karl Baldamus is buried in the St. Helena cemetery in Baden near Vienna .

Baldamus wrote numerous poems, small prose and novels, most of which, however, have long since been forgotten. He actively participated in the production of almanacs and literary pocket calendars. In novels and fragments of novels he processed, partially already anticipating Young Germany, cultural topics and the like. Time issues. He has also worked as a translator, among others for Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Lord Byron . According to Goedeke, however, they were among the richest and most witty of his time.
