content
The merchant Bolschow has a 19-year-old daughter, Olimpiada Samssonowna (Lipotschka), who dreams of being married off rich and noble. The planned marriage of the daughter is thematically amalgamated with how Bolshov wants to get rid of his property and fortune at the expense of his creditors. He hands it over to his commissioner Podchaljusin, who in turn is awarded the hand of Bolshov's daughter - everything should stay in the family. The daughter complies with the marriage because of the prospect of finally being able to leave her parents' house. Together with Podchaljusin, she squanders her father's fortune. Bolschow ends up in prison because of his indebtedness, his newly rich son-in-law is finally picked up by a police officer on suspicion of stolen goods .
