Fire & Flame - With firefighters in action is a German documentary series that was first broadcast on Mondays on WDR television from May 15, 2017 . It is an offshoot of the Belgian series "Helden van Hier".
Content and description
In the documentary series, real professional firefighters from the Gelsenkirchen professional fire brigade (seasons 1 and 2) and the Bochum professional fire brigade (seasons 3 and 4) are accompanied in their everyday life and their operations. Some forces wear a body cam in order to give the most authentic impression possible. The series is only commented on by firefighters who were on site during the operations; there is no comment from the off or from external speakers.
Both the visual-creative and the dramaturgical structure of an episode largely correspond to the Belgian model, which is produced by the Belgian production company Geronimo and is broadcast in Belgium, the Netherlands and Austria (dubbed).
There are also similarities with the German format " 112: Feuerwehr im Einsatz ".

production
For the first season, the film team accompanied the emergency services of the central fire and rescue station in Gelsenkirchen-Buer for five months . Up to 20 cameras were used at one location and over 1000 hours of video material were produced during the shooting. For the production of the second season the number of simultaneously used cameras was increased to 57, for the third season even to 60. Particularly for this production, particularly heat-resistant and robust cameras were made, which did not interfere with the fire fighters during their work. In the second season, the fire and rescue stations Buer and Heßler were accompanied by a 20-person film team that worked in shifts. The third season was filmed from June 2019 at fire stations 2 and 3 at the Bochum fire department .
Broadcasting and audience ratings
The first season of the series was broadcast on Mondays in the evening program of the WDR from May 15, 2017. It achieved a market share of 7.1% among the core target group of 35 to 55 year olds, which was above the broadcaster average, and there was also a strong response on the in-house YouTube channel.
Due to the overwhelming response, a second season should be produced from autumn 2017 and broadcast from spring 2018. However, in January 2018 it became known that there were delays in the start of shooting. Filming for the second season finally began on March 3, 2018. From January 21, 2019, the second season was broadcast on WDR.
The WDR announced a third season with a new fire station from the Ruhr area . In May 2019 it was announced that a third season with the Bochum professional fire department is in progress. The third season was broadcast from March 23, 2020, in the media library from March 19, 2020. On April 23, 2020, the Bochum fire brigade announced a fourth season on their Facebook page in cooperation with the WDR.
