Philippe Godet

Philippe Ernest Godet (born April 23, 1850 in Neuchâtel ; † September 27, 1922 there ) was a Swiss writer .

Life

Philippe Godet was the son of the theologian Frédéric Godet , whose biography he published in 1913. He studied law in Neuchâtel, Basel, Berlin and Paris.

From 1873 to 1881 he worked as a lawyer and also wrote for various newspapers. From 1881 to 1907 he taught French literature at the secondary school for girls, from 1892 (until 1922) also at the grammar school and from 1900 at the Académie (which later became the University of Neuchâtel ).

Self-author of poems and plays, he became known as a leading literary historian and critic of French-speaking Switzerland. Posthumously in 1923 he was awarded the Great Schiller Prize by the Swiss Schiller Foundation, honoring the life's work of Swiss writers from all four national languages.

His son Marcel Godet was director of the Swiss National Library from 1909 to 1945 .
