Frédéric Louis Godet (born October 25, 1812 in Neuchâtel ; † October 29, 1900 there ) was a Swiss theologian .

Life

After studying at the universities of Neuchâtel , Bonn and Berlin , Godet was ordained as a Reformed preacher in 1836 and took up a position as an assistant pastor in Valangin . In 1838 he was appointed chaplain to Prince Wilhelm of Prussia in Berlin, where he also worked as a French teacher for his son Friedrich . From 1844 to 1850 he was again assistant pastor in the Val de Ruz , from 1850 to 1873 professor of biblical exegesis at the state academy of Neuchâtel and from 1851 to 1866 pastor in Neuchâtel. In 1873 he resigned from the state church, co-founded the Église Indépendante de Neuchâtel and worked as a professor at its theological faculty until 1887. His biography was edited in 1913 by his son, the literary historian Philippe Godet .

Godet wrote a well-known commentary on the Gospel of John and other commentaries on the Gospel of Luke , the Letter to the Romans, and the Letter to the Corinthians . He received honorary doctorates from the universities of Basel and Edinburgh for his scientific work .
