Wilhelm Adolf Erman (born June 13, 1850 in Berlin , † May 19, 1932 in Bonn ) was a German librarian and geographer.

Life

Wilhelm Erman was the son of the physicist Georg Adolf Erman and brother of the Egyptologist Adolf Erman and the lawyer Heinrich Erman . After attending the French grammar school in Berlin, he studied geography, classical philology, Sanskrit, history and philosophy at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and Leipzig University from 1868 to 1872 . Like all his brothers he was a member of the Leipzig fraternity Germania . In 1872 he received his doctorate in Leipzig .

In 1874 he began his librarianship at the Royal Library in Berlin . In 1879 he became curator there, and in 1886 librarian. In 1889 he took over the management of the Berlin university library - initially on a temporary basis, then finally from 1890. From there he moved to the University Library in Breslau as director in 1901 . In 1907 he finally came to the Bonn University Library , which he managed until his retirement in 1920. Along with Karl Dziatzko , Otto Hartwig and Fritz Milkau, Erman was one of the most influential advisors to Friedrich Althoff in his reform of the library system in Prussia. For his part, Althoff initiated and promoted the monumental bibliography of German universities . Carl Manfred Frommel wanted to dare to re-issue the “huge title work”, but died in 1938. From 1878 to 1889 Erman was also a scientist in geography and published the reports of the African Society in Germany .

Erman married Klara Rathenow and they had six children together.
