Ewald Horn

Ewald Horn (born January 15, 1856 in Görsdorf (Tauche) , † March 7, 1923 ) was a German biologist and university historian. His bibliography of German universities is still considered a standard work today.

Life

Horn attended the school of the Francke Foundations in Halle (Saale) from 1867 to 1875 . After graduating from high school, he studied at the Friedrichs University in Halle and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . From 1881 he was a senior teacher. He had to give up the job because of his hearing loss . The Georg-August-University of Goettingen doctorate him in the Year of Three Emperors to Dr. phil. In 1889 he became a scientific assistant in the Prussian Ministry of Spiritual, Educational and Medical Affairs . From 1899 he was head of the information center for higher education with the title of professor. From 1900 onwards he published several overviews of the higher education system. He became known through the bibliography of the German universities , which he brought out with Wilhelm Erman after 15 years of work in 1904/05 despite considerable tensions. It remained the only one of a series of larger bibliographies suggested by Friedrich Althoff . With increasing familiarization with the matter, Horn had changed from a natural scientist to a university historian. He bequeathed his student library to Oskar Scheuer in Vienna.

Together with his wife Elsa geb. Hesler (* 1873) gave Horn the daughter Hertha (* 1901) and the son Heinrich (* 1909).
