Karl Dziatzko

Karl Dziatzko (pronunciation (IPA) [dʒiˈatsko] , born January 27, 1842 in Neustadt in Upper Silesia , † January 13, 1903 in Göttingen ) was a German librarian and classical philologist .

From 1859 to 1863 he studied classical philology in Breslau and Bonn , where he was also an assistant at the university library, which was headed by his academic teacher Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl . After receiving his doctorate in 1863 on the prologues of Plautus and Terenz , Dziatzko was initially a teacher at grammar schools in Opole and from 1865 in Lucerne . At the end of April 1871 he became head of the Freiburg University Library for a short time , where he qualified as a professor in Classical Philology in the same year.

After a brief return to the school service in Karlsruhe, he became director of the University Library in Breslau on October 1, 1872 , which he comprehensively reorganized. The rules he created for the new alphabetical card catalog became the model for the Prussian instructions .

From October 1, 1886 until his death, Dziatzko was director of the Göttingen University Library and the first holder of the newly created chair for auxiliary library sciences at the University of Göttingen , which served in particular to train for the higher library service in Prussia.

Dziatzko played a central role, also as an advisor to Friedrich Althoff , in the reform of the academic library system at the end of the 19th century. He played a decisive role in the professionalization of the library profession through his training function in Göttingen and his participation in the formation of a professional association (initially as a section of the philologists' association).

Dziatzko worked scientifically in the field of Gutenberg research, incunabula and ancient books, as well as editor and explainer of the comedies of Terence.
