Ignát Herrmann (born August 12, 1854 in Chotieborsch ; † July 8, 1935 in Řevnice ) was a Czech writer , humorist and editor who also used the pseudonym Vojta Machatý, Švanda .

Life

As the thirteenth child of a lawyer clerk, he attended school in Hradec Králové , and in 1868 went to Prague to become an apprentice as a businessman. He worked in some places, such as in the Otto publishing house from 1873. From 1876 to 1878 he edited the satirical magazine "Paleček" and worked for several years as a lawyer until he became editor of the national papers ( Národní listy ) in 1885, initially as an administrator, from 1885 as a member of the editorial board. From 1888 he was chairman of the May Association ( Máj ). He also founded the magazine "Švanda dudák", which under his editorship had up to 40 years.

Works

His literary work was closely linked to newspapers and magazines in which he dealt with typical personalities of Prague life. He wrote serial novels such as Páté přes deváté and Muž bez třináctky . In Národní listy, he published perhaps his most successful novel Otec Kondelík a ženich Vejvara and the second part of his novel Tchán Kondelík a zeť Vejvara . A large part of his works were successfully filmed. His stories and novels reflect the world of the Czech petty bourgeois.

His works Allerlei Tierchen und Leuchten (1935) and Selected Stories (1908) were published in German.
