The Národní listy ( People's Papers ) appeared in Prague from 1861 to 1941 and was the most influential Czech political daily newspaper in the Kingdom of Bohemia during the Habsburg Monarchy and the First Czechoslovak Republic . With 10,000 issues a day, it was one of the highest-circulation papers of its time.

history

The organ of the national party Národní strana was founded in 1861 on the initiative of František Ladislav Rieger . The first editor was Julius Grégr . Just three years later, the party resigned itself because of internal disputes with the newspaper, since the editors and publishers not only saw themselves as the language organ of the liberals, but also pursued independent press work.

In 1865 the newspaper The Voice (Hlas) was included in the Národní listy and the newspaper won many Czech supporters of the revolution of 1848 .

The success of the newspaper was based on its openness, the sense of the moods of the readers and the courage to address unpleasant things. The newspaper uncompromisingly advocated civil rights and freedoms, a novelty in Austria. The paper printed verbatim speeches by Czech politicians in the Bohemian Landtag or in the Vienna Imperial Council , thereby supporting the Czech national movement .

The newspaper employed many editors who later became literary greats with civil courage. Examples are Jan Neruda , Vítězslav Hálek , Servác Heller and Josef Barák or the composer and music critic Bedřich Smetana . The paper also employed correspondents in European capitals.

In 1910 the Prague stock printing company took over the publishing house, which was managed by Karel Kramář and Alois Rašín . After the establishment of Czechoslovakia , the newspaper became the organ of the Československá národní demokracie (Czechoslovak National Democracy) party. The subscribers were mostly intellectuals such as lawyers, doctors, bank directors and industrialists.
