Together with Jan Neruda , Jakub Arbes , Adolf Heyduk and Rudolf Mayer, Hálek represented the so-called Májovci , with which a new era in Czech literature began and of which he was the spokesperson. He wrote poetry as a student at the Prague grammar school. After finishing the philosophical faculty at Charles University in Prague , he devoted himself only to literature and journalism. The focus of his work was lyric poetry. His collection of evening songs (Večerní písně) and In der Natur (V přírodě) are among the foundations of 19th century Bohemian poetry .

Above all, his stories and novellas , which revolved around Prague topics and village stories, were realistic , but also his journalistic work. As editor of the national newspaper (Národní listy) he wrote hundreds of political, literary feature articles , theater reviews and travelogues. He was involved in the first May almanac ( May 1858) and edited his yearbooks himself. Hálek was co-editor of the magazines Blumen (Květy) and Lumír .

He was active in the Artistic Discussion Round ( Umělecká beseda ), the center of cultural and social life of his time. After his death, the Májovci group disintegrated and the new generations of Ruchovci and Lumírovci came to the fore .
