Karel Matěj Čapek-Chod

Karel Matěj Čapek-Chod (born February 21, 1860 in Domažlice , † November 3, 1927 in Prague ) was a Czech writer and journalist , a representative of naturalism .

Life

The real name of the author was Matěj Čapek. He attended high school in Taus, where he graduated in 1879. He then began to study law in Prague, but did not graduate, but began working and writing as a journalist. 1884–1888 he was editor of the Olomouc newspaper Našinec , 1888–1890 of the newspaper Hlas národa , 1890–1900 at Národní politika and from 1900 editor at Národní listy .

At the end of the 1880s he began to work as a writer, where he was in close contact with the authors of the magazine Světozor . His friend Josef Václav Sládek said that the first name Matěj did not sound literary enough, which is why he has published under the name Karel Matěj Čapek since then. In 1917 he changed his name from Čapek to Čapek-Chod to distinguish himself from the brothers Josef and Karel Čapek, who worked in the same editorial office at Národní listy .

As a journalist, he has written numerous articles and features, trial reports, political essays and theater and art reviews. His conservative contributions appeared a. a. in Zvon , Cesta or Česká revue . As a political publicist, he took a decidedly nationalist point of view in Národní listy.

Čapek-Chod lived in Prague from 1888, where he is buried in the Vinohrady cemetery.
