history
The first documentary mention comes from the year 1265. There is a report of a place where silver is mined. The town belonged to Smil von Lichtenburg . To King City Chotěboř in 1278 was raised to royal town in 1331 by John of Luxembourg . Under Charles IV the city got a city wall.
During the Hussite Wars , the Taborite priest Petr Hromádka z Jistebnice conquered the region in 1421 and was then appointed city governor. When the soldiers of the royalists besieged the city, the Hussites surrendered . Three hundred of them were burned in public. The captain Petr Hromádka was executed in Chrudim . The Hussites took revenge by burning down the Benedictine monastery in Vilémov .
In 1499 the Trčka family took over from Lípa . Since they were on the side of the rebels during the Bohemian uprising , their possessions were confiscated by Emperor Ferdinand II (HRR) after the Battle of White Mountain . Other owners included the Riesenberg , the Kinský and, from 1836 until the confiscation in 1948, the Dobrženský von Dobrženitz . Count Wilhelm Leopold Kinský had the castle and chapel built in the early Baroque style in Chotěboř in 1701–1702. The Dobrženský counts got the castle and agricultural property back through a restitution process in 1992. Today the Chotěboř City Museum is located in the castle.
