Neighboring towns are Šachotín and Dolní Jablonná in the north, Česká Jablonná and Brzkov in the northeast, Hrbov in the east, Borský Mlýn and Polná in the southeast, Nové Dvory in the south, Kamenná in the southwest, Pozovice in the west, Lutrián, Smilov and Šlapanov in the northwest.

history

The villages of Horní Věžnice and Dolní Věžnice probably emerged in the first half of the 13th century along the Haberner Steig, an important trade route from Prague to Brno . The Horní Věžnice, built on the right of the Šlapanka, which was originally called Věžnice ( Wiesnitzbach ), has the shape of a Slavic round like the Prostřední Věžnice, which was later built on the left opposite in a river bend . Dolní Věžnice, on the other hand, is a hoof village that was built on both sides of the river by Bavarian colonists and miners during the silver mining period. The field name Na Šachtě still reminds of the mining era.

The first written mention of the villages Ober and Unter Wezenicz , which belonged to the Polish rulership, took place in 1356. Later the rulership was owned by the Lords of Waldstein and in 1553 it came to Zacharias von Neuhaus , who had married Katharina von Waldstein in that year. After Zacharias death in 1589, his nephew Adam II von Neuhaus appropriated the Polish rule. His son Joachim Ulrich had to sell the rule to his greatest creditor Hartwig Zeidlitz von Schönfeld ( Hertvík Zejdlic ze Šenfeldu ) in 1597. Mittel Wezenicz was also mentioned for the first time on the occasion of the sale . In the course of its history the place was called Wieznitz , Vesnitz , Weznitz and Wěžnitz . The population consisted mostly of Germans. The oldest local seals with the words WES.HORNI.WEZNICZE and DORFF.UNTER.WIEZNITZ have been handed down since the 18th century . In the 1770s a German school opened in Unter Wieznitz, which was also attended by the children of the Czech minority.

After the abolition of patrimonial rule , the municipalities of Unter Weznitz / Dolní Věžnice and Upper Weznitz / Horní Věžnice , belonging to the Polish district, were established in 1850 . The latter was connected to the Middle Weznitz / Prostřední Věžnice district . From 1878 both communities belonged to the Deutschbrod district . In Horní Věžnice, where a strong Czech minority lived, a Czech school was established in 1884. In 1895 a volunteer fire brigade was founded in Unter Weznitz , and in 1910 one was also formed in Horní Věžnice.

In 1925 both communities were merged under the name Věžnice . The Národní jednota Pošumavská ( National Association for the Bohemian Forest ), which represented the interests of the Czech population in the German settlement area and also ensured that the seat of the municipal administration came to Horní Věžnice, played a key role in this. After the end of the Second World War, the German residents were expelled . This also made Dolní Věžnice a purely Czech settlement. The community has had a coat of arms and a banner since 2005.
