Eli Marcus ( actually: Elias Marcus , born January 26, 1854 in Münster ; † September 13, 1935 there ; also known under the pseudonym Natzohme ) was a German writer and actor.

Eli Marcus was born on January 26, 1854, the eldest son of the Burgsteinfurt tanner Samuel Marcus (1810–1890) and his wife Betty Weingarten (1818–1893), who was born in Bruchhausen near Bremen, in Münster, where the father had been running a leather business since 1842 . This resulted in the S. Marcus shoe store on Roggenmarkt in 1875 . In his hometown, Eli attended the Marks Haindorf Foundation . After leaving secondary school, he went to the private pension institution for Israelite boys and youths of the liberal rabbi Philipp Heidenheim (1814–1906) in Sondershausen for three years . The commercial apprenticeship followed in Bochum from 1870 to 1872 before he returned to Münster. In 1893 he joined the association for the defense against anti-Semitism . Marcus was a committed member of Hermann Landois' zoological evening party . As a writer of Low German plays he became known in the Münsterland and was soon also considered an excellent interpreter of his poems . Newspaper articles from this period underline the enormous popularity of the dialect poet, who often wrote his folk plays under the pseudonym Natzohme , which was the name of his star role in the play Mester Tüntelpott . After the turn of the century, Marcus increasingly switched to Low German poetry, but without losing sight of the theater. He published a collection of Low German poems together with Landois.

After his son Ernst (NCO, bearer of the Iron Cross 1st class and the Friedrich August medal in silver) fell in World War I on July 25, 1917 , Eli Marcus gave up the shoe shop and turned to the antique business (buying and selling valuable antiquities and new art) . Shaken in his ideals by the November Revolution of 1918, Eli Marcus, who as a German patriot and convinced Prussian viewed the changing times with concern, withdrew more and more from the public. The inflation also destroyed a large part of its assets.

His last public appearance was at the age of 79 in the form of a radio interview. The city of Münster no longer commemorated his 80th birthday. During the time of National Socialism , Eli Marcus' pieces were not performed and were increasingly forgotten. In 1966 the city of Münster named the Eli-Marcus-Weg in Kinderhaus after him.

He died on September 13, 1935 in Münster and was buried in the Jewish cemetery .
