The Federação Angolana de Basquetebol (FAB) is the national umbrella organization for basketball in Angola . Since it was founded in 1976, it has resided in Rua Ginga in the capital Luanda . Since October 1996 it has been based in the Complexo Desportivo da Cidadela sports complex , also known as Pavilhão da Cidadela in Luanda.
history
On May 18, 1930, the first basketball game took place in Angola. On the 10th anniversary of the club's founding, Sporting Clube de Luanda , a subsidiary of Sporting Lisbon , played against the Associação Académica do Liceu Central Salvador Correia and won 8-5. In addition to these two clubs, there was only a third basketball club in what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola, the Clube Atlético de Luanda . Basketball then had a difficult time in Angola, where rowing and athletics were popular sports alongside football. A fourth club was not formed until two years later, with the establishment of a basketball department of Sport Lisboa e Luanda (later Sport Luanda e Benfica ), a subsidiary of Benfica Lisbon .
It was not until the late 1950s that basketball began to generate greater interest in Angola. Leagues were organized at Angola-wide level and below that at district level. From 1963 the Portuguese championship was organized by the Portuguese association Federação Portuguesa de Basquetebol and played between the champions from Portugal and the overseas provinces of Angola and Mozambique . In 1969 Sport Luanda e Benfica won the Portuguese championship.
After Angola declared independence from Portugal in 1975, the Angolan Association Federação Angolana de Basquetebol (FAB) was founded in 1976. The FAB was incorporated in 1979 by the Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA).
Since then, FAB selections have won a number of international titles for Angola, which is one of the most successful basketball nations in Africa and the record champions of the African Basketball Championship . At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Angola was also represented at the Olympics for the first time and has since qualified several times, but so far without winning medals.

The FAB sends u. a. the Angolan national basketball team for men and the Angolan basketball team for women at international events, plus the U18, U16, U14 and U12 national teams.
The FAB hosted the 2007 African Championship and the 1999 African Basketball Championship , both of which were won by the Angolan selection. Angola is the record champions of the African Basketball Championship .
The FAB organizes the national club championship for men and women ( Campeonato Nacional Sénior Masculino and Campeonato Nacional Sénior Masculino ) and the Taça de Angola Cup . The most successful clubs include CD Primeiro de Agosto and Atlético Petróleos Luanda from the capital and CRD Libolo from Calulo .
Together with the Portuguese association Federação Portuguesa de Basquetebol , the FAB also organizes the Supertaça Luso-Angolana (also Super Taça Compal), a cup played between the Portuguese and Angolan champions. The Mozambican champions are now also playing for the trophy.
The FAB is a member of the Comité Olímpico Angolano , the Angolan National Olympic Committee .
