The AfroBasket 1999 ( shortly : Afrobasket 1999 ) is the 20th edition of this tournament and found in the from July 29 to August 6, 1999 Angolan cities Luanda and Cabinda instead. The winner of the tournament qualified for the basketball tournament at the 2000 Olympic Games .
Host Angola was able to regain its title, which it lost in 1997, and has won the last six events of the competition for the fifth time. They used the home advantage and won the tournament without defeat when they won the first round. Only two silver medalists, Nigeria, and the fourth-placed Malians, including “ Most Valuable Player ” Lamine Diawara, were able to keep the Angolans below ten points. Egypt won the bronze medal with only one tournament loss to Nigeria in the semifinals. Defending champion Senegal only came in seventh place.

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each as a round-robin tournament. While the two best-placed teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals in the knockout system , with a direct comparison among each other in the event of a tie , the other teams played another placement game against the tied team in the other group. The semi-finalists played the finalists and participants of the World Cup finals according to their group placement. The semi-final losers played for the bronze medal in the small final, while the winners of the semi-finals fought for the gold medal and the tournament victory in the final.
