The AfroBasket 2003 ( shortly : Afrobasket 2003 ) is the 22nd edition of this tournament was held from 7 to 19 August 2003 in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria . The fifth time an African final round was held in Egypt, the competition was held for the third time in Alexandria. The winner of the tournament qualified directly for the basketball competition of the 2004 Olympic Games . Other starting places were not intended for African teams.
Defending champions Angola won their third title in a row without defeat and seventh overall in the last eight events. They won all games with at least 13 points difference except in the game against Tunisia , where in the end eight points difference was enough to win. Nigeria won all of their games after their opening defeat against Algeria , including against hosts Egypt , until they lost to the defending champions in the final. Egypt still achieved the bronze medal after losing to Angola in the semi-final.
