The 1970 African Basketball Championship , the third women's African Basketball Championship , was held between March 28 and April 4, 1970 in Lomé , Togo , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was the national team of Madagascar , which won the title for the first time, undefeated, when it first participated. In the final, the United Arab Republic could be defeated. For the first time a team from the Republic of the Congo , Madagascar and Togo took part.

In the preliminary round there were two groups (group A and group B) of four (group A) and three (group B) teams. Each team played against each other of the respective group exactly once, so that each team played three (Group A) or two (Group B) games (a total of nine games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . The two third-placed players played for fifth place. The People's Republic of the Congo was the last in Group A to automatically be last of the tournament and finished in seventh place overall.
