The AfroBasket 2005 ( shortly : Afrobasket 2005 ) is the 23rd edition of this tournament and found from 15 to 25 August 2005 the Algerian capital Algiers instead and in Staoueli in the province of Algiers on the outskirts of the capital. The games of preliminary group B and the placement round for places 9 to 12 were held in Staouéli, while preliminary group A and the final round were held in the capital. The tournament medalists qualified for the 2006 World Cup finals .
Defending champion Angola won their fourth title in a row without defeat and eighth overall in the last nine events; the smallest point difference was with five points in the semi-final victory over the later bronze medalist Nigeria . Host Algeria weakened in the end after losing only the last group game against Mali , which was insignificant for the hosts . After a large semi-final defeat against Senegal , they also lost the “small final” for the bronze medal significantly against Nigeria, which they had defeated in the preliminary round, and missed the Algerian selection so participation in the 2006 World Cup. Although Senegal made the final lost, Boniface N'dong was voted " Most Valuable Player " by the loser in the final and silver medalist .

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each as a round-robin tournament. While the two worst teams in each group then played out places nine to twelve in a placement round, the other eight teams reached the final round, each of which was played in a knockout system . The losers of the games of the quarterfinals played from places five to eight in a placement round, while the losers of the games of the semifinals in the "small final" not only for the bronze medal at this tournament, but also for the remaining starting place for the 2006 World Cup played. The winners of the semi-finals qualified for the World Cup finals and played for the gold medal.
