The AfroBasket 2001 ( shortly : Afrobasket 2001 ) is the 21st edition of this tournament was held at the from 4 to 12 August 2001 Moroccan cities Casablanca and Rabat instead. The finalists of the tournament qualified for the finals of the 2002 World Cup .
Defending champion Angola was able to win the tournament again in a group defeat against Algeria after defeating the same opponent in the final. Egypt secured the bronze medal against Tunisia in the "small final" .

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each as a round-robin tournament. While the two best-placed teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals in the knockout system , with a direct comparison among each other in the event of a tie , the other teams played another placement game against the tied team in the other group. The semi-finalists played the finalists and participants of the World Cup finals according to their group placement. The semi-final losers played for the bronze medal in the small final, while the winners of the semi-finals fought for the gold medal and the tournament victory in the final.
