The 1993 African Basketball Championship , the seventeenth African Basketball Championship , took place between September 18 and 28, 1993 in Nairobi , Kenya , where the championship was held for the first time. The winner was Angola , which was able to defend its title and win the title for the third time in a row. In the final Egypt could be defeated. For the first time a team from Gabon took part in the tournament.
The preliminary round was played in two groups (group A and B) of four (group A) and five (group B) teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly three (Group A) or four games (a total of 16 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . Since the teams placed second to fourth in Group A were tied and Kenya won against Algeria, Algeria against Mali, and Mali against Kenya, the relative basket ratio of these three games decided. Since Kenya with +22 had the better relative basket ratio than Algeria (−9) and Mali (−13), the Kenyan team moved into the semi-finals. Angola played against Senegal and Egypt against Kenya for a place in the final. The third placed played for fifth place and the fourth placed for seventh place Gabon landed last in Group B in ninth place overall and was thus last of the tournament.
