The Basketball -Afrikameisterschaft 1997 ( shortly : Afrobasket 1997 ) is the 19th edition of this tournament was held at the from July 25 to August 3, 1997 Senegalese capital Dakar instead. This was the third edition of the continental finals in the capital of Senegal. The finalists of the tournament qualified for the finals of the 1998 World Cup .
Host Senegal took advantage of the home advantage and defeated the previously undefeated defending champions Angola in the semi-finals. In the final you could then clearly defeat the Nigerians , against whom you had suffered the only tournament defeat in the preliminary round. Angola remained after the repetition of the preliminary round victory over Egypt in the "small final" the bronze medal.

At the tournament, a preliminary round was played in two groups, with five teams in one group and four in the other group playing against each other in a round-robin tournament . While the two best-placed teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals in the knockout system , with a direct comparison among each other in the event of a tie , the other teams played another placement game against the tied team in the other group. The last placed team in the group of five teams was automatically placed in ninth and last place in the tournament. The semi-finalists played the finalists and participants of the World Cup finals according to their group placement. The semi-final losers played for the bronze medal in the small final, while the winners of the semi-finals fought for the gold medal and the tournament victory in the final.
