The 1980 African Championship , the tenth African Basketball Championship , took place between March 22 and 30, 1980 in Rabat , Morocco , which was the third time the championship was held. The winner was the national team of Senegal , which won the title for the fourth time, for the second time in a row. As in the previous 1978 event , Ivory Coast was narrowly beaten in the final. For the first time a team from Angola took part in the tournament.

In the preliminary round there were two groups (group A and B) of five (group A) and six (group B) teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played exactly four (Group A) or five (Group B) games (a total of 25 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . Since in Group B Mauritania won against Somalia, Somalia against the People's Republic of the Congo and the People's Republic of the Congo against Mauritania, the basket ratio from these three matches decided, so that the rankings below resulted. In the semifinals, the first-placed teams played against the second-placed teams in the other group. The third placed played for fifth place, the fourth placed seventh place and the fifth placed and group last played ninth place. As the last in Group B, Nigeria was automatically the last of the tournament.
