The 1997 African Basketball Championship , the fourteenth women's African Basketball Championship , took place between December 12 and 20, 1997 in Nairobi , Kenya , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was the Senegalese national team , which won the title for the eighth time. In the final, the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be defeated. For the first time a team from Uganda and Tanzania took part in the tournament.

In the preliminary round there were two groups (group A and group B) of five (group A) and four (group B) teams. Each team played against each other in the respective group exactly once, so that each team played four (Group A) or three (Group B) games (a total of 16 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points in each group advanced to the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . The third placed played for fifth place and the fourth placed for seventh place. Uganda, as the last in Group A, was automatically last in the tournament, finishing ninth overall.
