The 1981 African Basketball Championship for women , the seventh African Basketball Championship for women , took place between September 5 and 13, 1981 in the Senegalese capital Dakar , which was the second time the championship was held. The winner was the national team of Senegal , which won the title for the fourth time, undefeated, in a row. In the final, Zaire could be beaten. For the first time a team from Zaire and Angola took part in the tournament.
In the preliminary round there were two groups (group A and group B) of four teams each. Each team played against each other of the respective group exactly once, so that each team played three games (a total of 12 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The two teams with the highest points moved into the semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . The third placed played for fifth place and the fourth placed for seventh place.
