The 1983 African Basketball Championship for women , the eighth African Basketball Championship for women , took place between April 3 and 10, 1983 in the Angolan capital Luanda , which hosted the championship for the first time. The winner was the Zaires national team , which was unbeaten for the first time and won the title. For the first time a team from Mozambique and Cameroon took part in the tournament.
In the preliminary round was in the form of a round-robin tournament . Each team played against each other exactly once, so each team played five games (a total of 15 games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. The team with the best points was the women's African basketball champions in 1983. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . Since Mozambique, Angola and Ivory Coast were tied and Mozambique won against Ivory Coast, Ivory Coast against Angola and Angola against Mozambique, the relative basket ratio (Mozambique: +1; Ivory Coast: 0; Angola: −1) decided from these three games.
